PULS, Lucy

(b. 1955 - Milwaukee, WI) works with ordinary consumer items that are typically used and discarded. In this body of work, Puls uses instantly recognizable vinyl LP covers from the 1960s and 70s, recalling images that are lodged in our collective memory. She is more interested in these album covers for their pervasiveness and familiarity than for their individual value or meaning. Puls captures the familiar wear and tear of album covers by sanding portions of them down, replicating the images in print form, and then affixing them to a wood support. The fake apples that dot Olivia Newton John's face in this piece serve possibly as a way of contrasting the organic, decaying album cover with objects that appear organic yet are unchanging. Puls earned a BS from the University of Wisconsin in 1977 and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1980. She has exhibited her work primarily in California as well as in New York since 1981. 2003.303
