Dean, Stephen
Progressive commissioned Dean to create these banners that would complement the surrounding massive architecture. The banners are suspended from the eastern to western sides of the room. The artist intended to create "a colored solar calendar." Dean chose the colors of many nations resulting in a myriad of abstract compositions which float within this enormous structure. Colors are extracted from flags as diverse as Denmark and Mozambique. The banners are attached through a simple cable network which is reminiscent of ships and flag poles. The banners appear somewhat transitory as the colors seem to shift as light travels through these compositions at different times of the day. Dean was born in 1968 in Paris, France and studied at Otis Parsons School of Design, LA and Parsons School, Paris. The artist, who now lives in New York, has been included in group exhibitions at the Bronx Museum for the Arts, NY; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH and the Drawing Center, NY. 1995.001
