LEVINTHAL, David

(b. 1949 - New York, NY) reaches back to the popular history of his childhood by constructing miniature dioramas in which he stages hand-painted models. He is best known for his images of toy soldiers and cowboys and Indians that vividly recall the sense of theatricality, color and setting of 1950s television westerns. States Levinthal, "Much of my work over the years has dealt with myth, fantasy and childhood. Like the work with toy cowboys and Indians, my baseball series is both an artistic and personal exploration. Using the stylized iconography of vintage plastic figures from the 50s and 60s, I have endeavored to recreate and capture the intimate sensibilities of the world of baseball from my youth." The figures represent an eclectic group of players, featuring great stars and lesser known players alike. The camera's limited depth of field imbues a sense of realism and movement to these inanimate objects. Levinthal earned a BA from Stanford University, CA, and an MFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT. He has been exhibiting his work throughout the United States and in Europe since 1977, and it is included in such public collections as that of the High Museum, Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC. He currently lives and works in New York City.
